The need

To be a part of the NT Thunder Coaching team to help establish strength and conditioning protocols in their new training facility.

Project overview

The NT Thunder is the Northern Territory’s premier sports team, playing in the North Eastern AFL competition and are the 2015 Premiers.

For the 2015 Season, the NT Thunder moved into the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre. This facility is the new home of the NT Thunder Program and has a gym, recovery pools, education room and full change rooms and medical facilities.

I was asked by the then CEO of NT Thunder, Jarred Ilett, to come on as the Athletic Performance Coach to assist with the strength and conditioning programming as well as bringing in a nutritionist as part of the servicing.

The role was one of firstly developing a relationship with the players and other coaches, whilst also developing protocols and programs for the Program within the new centre.

The players are either in fulltime work or study and so their training commitments are a lot less than those of professional athletes. Yet the North Eastern Football League has reserve teams from AFL clubs such as the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans, so the level of competition is very high.

I developed a repore with the players that enabled me to work alongside them whilst also implementing a program that encouraged functional movement and foundational strength.

My holistic approach to athlete development was at the core of how I developed this program. I also provided mentoring to a Charles Darwin University Exercise and Sport Science student through the NT Thunder program.

I was proud to be part of the team that won the 2015 North Eastern AFL Grand Final.

From 2016 the NT Thunder employed a full-time Strength and Conditioning Coach, something which has continued to build on the foundations we set in 2015.
